Today was the first day of our 4-day Computer Skills through Humane Education Summer group at the Leander Public Library. Our group had the chance to spend some time with shelter resident Ryder, a playful 1 1/2 year old terrier mix. We read the book "Before you were mine" and discussed different reasons that animals end up in shelters. The group was then introduced to Microsoft Word, and allowed to write personal recommendations for Ryder (below).
Ryder’s Tomorrow

He jumps, plays, runs
Tomorrow
he sees many people
some of them friendly, some of them not.
Tomorrow
he leaps into his protector’s arms.
Tomorrow
he rolls in the grass,
loving his freedom,
but wanting someone to share it with.
Tomorrow
he cries for an owner;
he loves his protectors,
but wants a forever family.
Tomorrow
he perks his ears,
smelling the perfect scent,
but knowing he shouldn’t run after it,
for his protectors do not like that,
and he loves them, and obeys.
Tomorrow,
he hugs you,
a bundle of love, untapped in his natural habitat.
Tomorrow, he smiles and licks at everyone,
family,
protectors,
and even the people who just drive by,
uncaring,
unable,
or even just unknowing of his situation.
But today,
you can help him.
Today, as you drive by …
